A Different Banana

We all LOVE bananas!

However, for as long as these fabulous fruits have been exported, the ethical credentials of the companies in control of their production have been at best questionable and at worst, shockingly poor.

Organic and Fair Trade certification goes some way to protect the quality of production but neither have ever been enough to ensure that banana growers receive a fair price for their labour. One which would enable them to create resilient biodiverse agro-ecosystems, prevent soil degradation and at the same time pay themselves a decent living wage.

We at A Different Banana, a new supply chain partnership that links small-scale Peruvian banana growers with UK businesses believe it’s high time that this situation changed. Our social enterprise is looking to establish better, more ethical and sustainable production and trading practices between consumers and banana growers. We are committed to creating a resilient market based on these better trading practices in the UK.

Here you can meet the farmers and see their farms, learn about how bananas travel to the UK and explore the costs of every stage of the operation. Simply put in the batch number (you’ll find this on your banana!) in the space below.
